How to Care for Your Wedding Veil Before the Big Day

Once your Calily veil arrives, the first thing to do is take it out of its storage bag. It comes folded in half, which means there should only be a few light wrinkles at most.

Hanging your veil for storage

Grab a hanger from your closet, ideally one with a small crossbar attachment so you can drape the veil over it evenly. Fold the veil in half and drape it over the hanger. If your wedding is still a few months away, slip a garment bag over it to protect the tulle and any lace embellishments from dust in the meantime.

In the days before your wedding

Take your veil out a couple of days before the big day. Do not leave this to the morning of. Find the highest hanging spot you have so the veil can hang freely and any remaining wrinkles fall out naturally. If you do not have a high enough spot, lay a clean towel or bed sheet on the floor beneath it so the veil does not pick up any dust or dirt from the ground.

Removing stubborn wrinkles

If you still notice a few stubborn wrinkles after hanging, use a steamer on a low setting and hold it at least 15 to 20 cm away from the fabric. Never press a hot iron directly onto the tulle. Another option that works well is running a hot shower nearby and letting the steam naturally release any remaining creases from the fabric.

How to Place Your Wedding Veil the Right Way

There is one veil placement mistake that comes up again and again, and it is an easy one to avoid once you know what to look for.

The comb has a curve for a reason

Look at the comb on your veil and you will notice it has a slight curve to it. Before placing it in your hair, flip the veil over so the tulle falls nicely over the front of the comb. The curved side of the comb should face inward, following the natural shape of your head.

What happens if you place it the wrong way

If you insert the comb without flipping the veil first, the curve of the comb ends up facing outward away from your head. It is a subtle difference but it shows up in wedding photos in a way that most brides do not love. The fix is simple: flip it, then place it. You will see immediately that it sits far more naturally against your head.

A note for updos

Placing the comb facing outward can technically work with a very structured updo, but even then the shape of the comb tends to show in a way that is not ideal. The flipped placement works cleanly with every hairstyle, so it is always the better choice.

3 Simple Ways to Style Your Wedding Veil

Not sure how to wear your veil with your hairstyle? Here are three options that work beautifully, whether your hair is down, half-up, or in a full updo.

Option 1: Hair down

Place the comb near the top of your head so the veil layers over your hair rather than getting lost in it. This is a soft, romantic look that works especially well with longer veils and any edge detail.

Option 2: On top of a bun

Place the comb right at the top of your bun. The veil cascades down over the bun and the effect is classic and elegant. Make sure the comb is curved inward so it sits flush against your head.

Option 3: Underneath a bun

This is a favourite for brides who want their updo to be the centrepiece. Tuck the comb underneath the bun with the curve facing inward against your head. Add a couple of bobby pins to either side of the comb to keep it secure throughout the day. Your updo stays fully visible and the veil flows cleanly from beneath it.

Whichever style you choose, do a practice run at least once before your wedding day. You will find your placement in under a minute, and it means one less thing to think about when the morning arrives.
